Sin City

(This part of the movie My Globe Upside Down was filmed from the 14th till the 16th of March)

Las Vegas... IS what you expect... no more no less!! When we saw this huge city we understood perfectly WHY it´s called the sin city!! The people who are so rich and many times unhappy come here and feel good... being in Las Vegas is like being in a different world where everything and everybody is fantastic and EVERYTHING can be bought with money.

There are things that make your jaw drop (well you don´t expect less from this place) like betting your $10 in Bellagio sitting at a table next to Macaulay Culkin who is betting with the same easiness his 500 "bucks", or driving on the highway in the middle of the night... on the left a darkness like the hair of Snow White and on the right more or less the same, of course you are in the middle of the desert. Then suddenly you start seeing above the horizon small groups of lighs, after about two minutes you have so many lights in front of you that it looks like a Christmas lights competition... at that momento you know that there is no doubt that you are going in the right direction to Las Vegas.

After all the show, came the sad goodbye, it was time for Belén, Guillermo´s cousin to go back home, we had such a good time that it was really sad to break our little group of travelers.

For me Las Vegas is like Alice in Wonderland but instead of Alice we see people that don´t know what to do with their money.

Not less interesting is the history of this sin city:

Las Vegas, Spanish for 'The Meadows', was officially founded in 1905 and incorporated in 1911 with a population of only 800. Initially strict anti-gambling laws governed the state of Nevada but this all changed in 1931 when gambling was legalized throughout the state of Nevada.

It was after World War II that Las Vegas began to develop its reputation of 'Sin City'. Hotels and casinos were developed and entertainment and tourism became the valley's largest employer. Accordingly, by the 1960s wealthy businessmen were being attracted to the city. Billionaire Kirk Kerkorian was a major player in developing the modern city; he bought the Flamingo and in 1968 opened the biggest hotel in the world, the International Hotel.

Now, a hundred years after its conception, Las Vegas is one of the largest cities with a population exceeding two million. Wonderful resorts are still being created, all bigger and more luxurious than ever. Finally, Las Vegas remains the strongest contender for the world's major international tourist attraction.

The book of time

(This part of the movie My Globe Upside Down was filmed from the 11th till the 13th of March)

It´s five o´clock in the morning and my alarm is rining with strength... I get up with no problems becuase I know that today I´m going to witness something special...

The bus is coming, in 20 minutes I´m standing shaking from the cold at a lookout... but I don´t mind. I just concentrate on pointing my view towards the beautiful art of the nature. The sun´s alarm clock is also ringing... a little by little he starts to wake up above the horizon and THERE is the moment when I have right in front of me one of the most beautiful pictures of my life... the soft sunshine touches lightly the Grand Canyon, something so incredible and impossible to describe with words. A sunrise in the Grand Canyon has been saved in my chest of memories.

I´m happy that this was the first time I met the Canyon, since we arrived the night before. We were accompanied by a great guide that made me feel part of a history thousands of years old. But what are thousands of years for the Grand Canyon??

I would like to share with you a story that my friend Tony, a guide in the Grand Canyon, shared with us:

If you had a book of time, one book that told the entire story of the planet earth, today's geologists would say that just one page in that book would be equal to one million years. In total length that book would then be around 4,500 pages long. Human beings on this planet make up even less than one page; only a paragraph's worth, 1/5 of a page. Yet todays geologists speculate that the Grand Canyon has be forming, carving out over the last 5-6 million years! Even though 5-6 million years would sound like a long time to any human being, in that book, its only 5 or 6 pages old, quite young actually. But contained within the Canyon, in the layers of stone we see in the Canyon walls, are told far, far older stories. Each layer of stone is like a chapter of time, telling a different story about this place.

Todays geologists are able to read from these 'chapters' of time not by searching for text or script written in the stones them selves, but rather by looking for the illustrations we find: fossils. Starting at the Canyon rim, the youngest layer of stone the Kaibab Limestone...and working our way down to the Canyon floor, the oldest of these layers known as the Vishnu Schist: we explore almost 1/3 of our planet's history. Oceans, deserts, floodplains, swamps and estuary environments...the walls of Grand Canyon are a huge chronicle of change that happens over and over again over our planet's history. And even still, there are a lot of pages to be written in our book of time.

After the Grand Canyon we visited couple more Mother Nature's little tricks, the Antelope Canyon and the Horse shoe bend, both very close to Page.

We couldn´t believe our eyes when we entered throw a small hole into the canyon, the incredible colours...

The Navajo name for Lower Antelope Canyon is Hasdeztwazi or "Spiral Rock Arches." Many years ago, herds of Pronghorn Antelope roamed freely in, and around the canyon, which explains the English name.
This incredible canyon has been created over many thousands of years by the relentless forces of water and wind, slowly carving and sculpting the sandstone into forms, textures, and shapes which we observe today.
The views in Lower Antelope Canyon change constantly as the sun moves across the sky, filtering lights softly across the stone walls. These ever-moving sun angles bounce light back and forth across the narrow canyon's walls, creating a dazzling display of color, light, and shadow.

The horseshoe-shaped meander of the Colorado River was incredible to see... you just walk until you get to the border and there below you you see this great peace of art, just seeing a photo explains it all...
