We wanted to leave the trip to Kaikoura for the end of the south island because we knew that something incredible was waiting for us there. And it was true. Because of the big depth of the ocean so close to the shore it is possible to take a boat and in 15 min you are watching with your beautiful whales.
The captain uses a special radar throw which he receives the sound of the whales. Whenever he hears it he heads toward it at such a speed that you feel like being in the middle of a persecution! It's really funny because suddenly they advise you that you have to take your seat immediately, so everybody goes running to their seats pushing their neighbors, once you get there the battle is even worse because everybody wants the best spot on the deck to have the BEST photograph for the family album.
The captain stops about twenty meters from this HUGE animal, and there you stand watching this incredible animal float to the tone of the ocean, waiting for this “sperm whale” (that’s the name of this specie, I´m not joking) to pick the right moment for another bite of food deeper in the ocean… and that´s when the show begins. The enormous tale pops out of the water creating a small waterfall during couple of seconds.
Sperm whales are the largest toothed whales. Adult males grow to be about 50-60 feet (17-20 m) long, weighing about 40-50 tons (36-45 tonnes). Females are smaller, about 33-40 feet (11-13 m) long, weighing about 14-18 tons. The four-chambered heart of the average sperm whale weighs about 277 pounds (126 kg) - about as much as two average adult human beings.
In Kaikoura you can also see sea lion families, it's full of them. There is a little beach near a parking lot where there are tons of them and they are not shy at all to lay down for a while right next to your car. Sometimes you are not even sure if they'll let you get in your car :-). They are not dangerous but if they feel vulnerable they can attack. I think that they are one of the laziest animals I've ever seen… I think that I know more than one person that would love being a sea lion ;-)

Queríamos dejar Kaikoura para el final de la isla sur porque sabíamos que algo increíble nos esperaba allí. Llegamos con altas expectativas por lo que sabíamos y por lo que nos contaba la gente conforme íbamos acercándonos. No defrauda. Gracias a la profundidad del océano tan cercana a la costa, unos 3000 metros, coges un barco y en quince minutos estás viendo ballenas. Se dice pronto.
Mediante una especie de radar que capta a las ballenas a través del sonido que producen, conforme las va localizando, el barco se va acercando a las mismas. Es muy divertido porque cuando localiza una, el capitán da un giro radical al timón y se dirige hacia el animal a velocidad de vértigo como si de una persecución marítima se tratase. Las ganas que demuestra el capitán por enseñarte el cachalote y la velocidad, producen un cosquilleo en tu estómago advirtiéndote que algo grande se acerca... Mientras se va aproximando disminuye los nudos y cuando se encuentra a unos veinte metros del animal, apaga el motor y se detiene.
La especie que vimos se llama "Sperm Whale", no es broma... Es impactante verla flotando en el mar meciéndose y dejándose entrever al ritmo de las olas de alta mar. Cuando menos lo esperas se sumerge verticalmente y ahí empieza la función. De repente saca la cola a la superficie mientras el agua se desliza entre ella, formando una pequeña cascada que dura segundos. Puro espectáculo para la vista.
Los machos suelen medir unos veinte metros y pesar cincuenta toneladas, las hembras alrededor de doce metros y cuarenta toneladas. Cuando la ves dentro del agua hundiendose en el océano te pones a pensar en la grandeza del mar y en lo que se cocerá ahí debajo...
En Kaiokoura también hay muchas colonias de leones marinos. Hay una cala en la que algunos leones se acercan incluso hasta el parking. Se adueñan tanto de la tierra que a veces hay que pensarse dos veces el entrar en el coche, ya que fácilmente puedes tener a uno en la puerta descansando plácidamente. Aunque no son animales violentos, si te acercas mucho y se sienten indefensos pueden llegar a atacar. Dentro del agua es el animal mas ágil, en cambio en la tierra demuestran su torpeza y su imagen de perezosos. Conozco a más de uno que no le importaría ser un león marino!
