The Napalm Girl

(This part of the movie My Globe Upside Down was filmed from the 3rd of March till the 7th of March)

Here we continue in San Francisco. Uncle Louise´s house was about one hour by train from the center of the city. We took the train to Milbrae and there we switched to the metro (BART) that took us downtown. One day to save money we decided to take the same trane all the way to SF downtown (a little bit longer but cheaper)... we got off at 4th street and started walking towards Market street and without realising it we were  on 6th street, not a nice place to be... it was like being in the middle of the shooting of the movie ¨Dangerous Minds¨... now I know why you should switch to the metro hahaha. It was an experience that till that day I only saw in the movies. We were really suprised by the amount of homeless people that you can see in SF, just pushing their shopping cart with their few belongings. It seems that the reason is the mild climate... never gets too cold... but with all the rain... Would you pick this city??

San Francisco Chinatown is the largest Chinatown outside of Asia as well as the oldest Chinatown in North America. I felt really lucky, got to visit China and SF with just crossing the street :-)... I was really suprised about the strength of the chinese culture so far away from their home. It felt like somebody just cut out a part of a chinese town and moved it to the center of SF. Incredible, each detail is so perfectly ¨made in China¨. I entered a chinese restaurant and the whole menu was written in chinese letter on the wall. I was loving the feeling of being in the middle of a real chinese community... but to my deception when I aproached the waiter to order my meal he gave me a perfectly translated menu... bummer I was looking forward to just stopping my finger on any meal after counting till three.  Anyway it was the best chinese meal that I have ever eaten.

One of the things that we really enjoyed was crossing the whole downtown in a Cable car... up.... down at some moments I closed my eyes and felt like being on a roller coaster. After our great ride and a photo of each of us driving the cable car we headed towards the famous gay Castro district, one of the safest districts in town. A really cool place with a lot of nice pubs, the first place with nightlife that we found in SF. I think that according to what I have heard the young people in SF go out really early, like around 6pm and then they return home also early, of course who would want to go up to the top of those hills after four beers?? Everything makes sense in this city!!

The day before leaving SF Lissy, Guillermo´s cousin, spent a day with us. She took us to MOMA, The Museum of Modern Art, an incredible place. The thing that we enjoyed the most was the photography exposition, when we entered one of the halls Guillermo came to me with an amazed look on his face: ¨Nicole you must see this¨. In a couple of seconds I was standing in front of two VERY famous photographs, both Pulitzer Prize winning. One of them the Vietnam Execution, photographed by Eddie Adams and the Napalm Girl (Phan Thị Kim Phúc) photographed by Nick Ut,  taken during the Vietnam war on June 8, 1972. The photo shows a girl at about nine years of age running naked on a road after being severely burned on her back by a South Vietnamese napalm attack. I couldn´t believe that I was really standing in front of them I went back several times, I just couldn´t stop looking at them. Really I-N-C-R-E-D-I-B-L-E. I also liked Richard Avedon's photograph of Andy Warhol's chest and abdomen, showing the scars caused by the gunshot wounds inflicted by Valerie Solanas in 1968.

Later that day we visited the Contemporary Jewish Museum. But quiet disappointing. We ended the great day with even a greater plate of sushi. The best I´ve ever had, Guillermo didn´t enjoy it quiet as much but he did ok with a king crab stick... hahaha.. OMG what will he eat in Asia.
