Animal Farm

(This part of the movie My Globe Upside Down was filmed from the 17th till the 22nd of May)

After The Catlins we continued on the east coast of New Zealand. This part was quite fast because there is not much to see. One of the stops that I really enjoyed was Dunedin, a little town with a population of about 120.000 residents. What I enjoyed the most were the second hand bookstores. It was really hard getting me out of there :-) !! Thousands and thousands of books of all ages decorating the shelves that completely covered all the walls. And the smell... I really don't know what I enjoy more, if reading the book or the smell that it has after being around years and years.

When I woke up from the dream of floating between books we got into Pierre II and headed to Christchurch. A great city that was sadly hit by a terrible earthquake this year. I could never imagine that the reality could be so close to the movies about disasters. The WHOLE center of the city was closed, it looked like a ghost town. The offices empty with the cups of coffee still on the desk. The people couldn't go back after the disaster because the buildings were no longer safe, so we found everything exactly the same way as it was left the sad day, 22nd of February, the same day our big adventure began...

After that we found a really nice spot to camp over the night. We prepared a great lunch sitting next to a nice river, better than any posh restaurant. After about a half an hour a woman came by, Susan, she was holding a little dog asking us if it was ours! Of course it wasn´t but it led us to a nice conversation. We found out that she was from Menlo Park, the same Menlo Park where we spent a week with Guillermo's family, uncle Louise and aunt Emma! It was an incredible coincidence. Susan was really excited about remembering her childhood and we were excited about remembering all the special moments from Menlo Park. Susan was so happy that she invited us to her farm. What a place, so many beautiful animals and all of them were pets! They ran behind us and wanted us to pet them like if they were dogs!! Susan lives with her adopted daughter that suffres from autism. It was really a unique experience for us.

The next day Susan took me to her neighboors house for some horse riding. I loved the idea because I was really looking forward to riding in such a beautiful countryside. When we were returning back home I really don't know what happened but during one of the gallops Susan fell off the horse. She couldn't manage to get up really good so we had to call the ambulance. Before getting in she asked me to please take care of the farm for couple of days!!

So there I was, with the keys from her car and still in a shock! I didn't really know my way back. In New Zealand a neighboor can live easily fifteen minutes from your house but finally I managed to get back and explained the situation to Guillermo who just stared at me and couldn't believe that we had to take care of 2 sheeps, 2 horses, 2 ponies, 3 goats, 7 pigs and I don't know how many chucks (thats how they call them in New Zealand hahaha).

During the process of relocating the animals for the night some of the chickens got into the house running around eating what they could!! And the goats destroying Susan's garden!! When we finally got the situation under control and were about to collapse in a chair one of the pigs started screaming like if he was dying, the pony was biting his ears! Guille got hold of a stick and ran after the pony. I stood there quite suprised, it looked like Guille did this every night. After a lot of work finally all animals were in their respective sheds and we fell asleep like two babies! Being a farmer is much harder than I thought!!

We stayed there in control of the farm for three days until Susan got better!! What an experience...

¿¿Granjas a nosotros?? ¡Cuantos más animales mejor!!
