Discovering the ice

(This part of the movie My Globe Upside Down was filmed from the 22nd till the 29th of April)

Hokitika was a little town that marked me. It really didn't have anything really special but I just felt good being there. In the Lonely Planet, our Bible during the last five months, they describe this city as a western style little town but I can't really agree with that. What I did really like was a virgin beach where we met a group of people making sculptures out of branches. It was there way of celebrating a recent wedding, I really loved the idea. We explored all the beautiful tracks around Hokitika. The most beautiful was the Hokitika Gorge. The water was so blue, I have never seen something like that before.

From there we went to the famous Pancake rocks, incredible rocks shaped like pancakes.....

It was time to put on all our clothes and head to the Franz Josef Glacier. The Māori name for the glacier is Ka Roimata o Hinehukatere ('The tears of Hinehukatere'), arising from a local legend: Hinehukatere loved climbing in the mountains and persuaded her lover, Wawe, to climb with her. Wawe was a less experienced climber than Hinehukatere but loved to accompany her until an avalanche swept Wawe from the peaks to his death. Hinehukatere was broken hearted and her many, many tears flowed down the mountain and froze to form the glacier.

We wanted to experience the glacier and feel it under our bodies, to do that you have to pay for a guided tour that takes you up on the ice. If you don't want to pay you can see the Glacier from a view point about 100m from the ice. We weren't sure if we should do the whole day tour or just the half day one but finally we decided to do the full day one and I think it's much better because you get to see beautiful caves that are so high that on a half day tour it´s impossible to see. We loved the experience of walking on the ice. We finished the great day in the hot pools that where included in the tour to warm up our bodies!! It felt soooooo good!!
