Abel Tasman

(This part of the movie My Globe Upside Down was filmed from the 10th till the 12th of April)

One, two, three... And like that until 39.999.999! You can be sure that if the kiwis don't sleep it's not  because of not having sheeps to count: in the country there are ten times more cattle, around forty millions, than population, only four millions!

On the 31st of March we landed in New Zealand, Auckland after a more than comfortable flight. The seats in the tourist class transformed into a sky couch... The ones to be jealous this time were those who paid three times more than we did...

We realized right away that we had to get a campervan and go down south to enjoy the last sunshine! We were so anxious that we picked our van that same afternoon and bought it the next day. Pierre II was alive!! Buying a car here in New Zealand is easier than sending a certified letter in Spain. You just go to the Post Office, fill out a short form and the car is yours! We bought a van in which the back part is prepared for sleeping with a pretty big bed and all the space underneath to put cooking stuff and all kind of camping gear to comfortably "live" on four wheels! After a big clean up and a couple of changes we started our trip... Of course we made the typical beginners mistake: the night came and we still had no place to sleep. Finally we found a camping but the manager was sound asleep and so where the people in their tents... so we decided to sleep outside the entrance and leave early in the morning!! The thing is that "early" for a childrens camp is much earlier than our "early" so when we woke up there were already children playing Indiana Jones close to our van. Guille moved with great gymnastic moves to the driver's seat and we left before we were caught by the owner!! We passed from sleeping in the "best" motels in the USA to run away in pijamas without paying the camping fee.

The first thing that we decided to do in the south island was to walk part of the Abel Tasman coast track! A water taxi took us..... Onetahiti Beach...... We had in front of us a two day track. The landscape was incredible, a lot of beautiful beaches and green, green and more green! We booked the night in a aquapacker, a floating backpackers (13 m long catamaran ancered in anchorage bay.) There were only couple more kilometres to go before arriving to the backpackers when we discovered the reality of the high tide and low tide. Until now we heard about it but didn't really pay much attention, like if it was not really concerning us hahaha!! But now we were standing on the side of a beach looking at the sign posts that marked our way, almost totally flooded! So we had no other choice than to walk around. We almost ran to arrive before dark, doing 5 km in 45 min. But when we finally got to the beach from where you could see the catamaran floating like a peaceful cloud, we were surrounded by total darkness!! We shouted, jumped to get their attention. We were lucky that there were some kids camping on the beach and helped us shout, after about 15 min the captain arrived in his little boat, instead of a "hello" we got a "what a stupid hour to show up" hahaha but at the end he showed up to be nicer than we thought.

Floating during the whole night was quite an experience. The next day we finished our track and felt very satisfied with ourselves. We had a great time during those two days, having to cross rivers with our shoes
hanging from our shoulders and crawling under huge rocks!!

Livin´ LA

(This part of the movie My Globe Upside Down was filmed from the 26th till the 30th of March)

We had such a good time in America that we decided to stay eight more days. After almost 4000 miles we found ourselves again in LA, a city where many of our dreams came true.

Our faithful friend Jawn was there waiting for us, willing to show us what we weren´t able to see the first time. We went to Malibu, the walk of fame and to see from up close the famous Hollywood sign on a "supposedly" easy track... right Jawn??

We also had the opportunity to go to a concert of the Wild Child, a tribute band to The Doors and what better place than "Whiskey a go go"!! I think that it´s almost imposible to find somebody else with such a similar voice and appearance. The vocal of Wild Child, Dave Brock has sought perfection on each and every song. I wasn´t at all suprised to find out that he collaborates with the real Doors. Talking about music, after being at a concert in Valencia listening to Ray Manzarek and Robbie Krieger playing live about four years ago, I must say that you can´t compare them to the tribute band.

After visiting so many unique places, driving on parts of the Route 66, having in front of us racoons, wild boars and even a little tornado it was time to say "goodbye America". But a little problem with Nicole's passport delayed our departure, LA didn´t want to let us go...what problem should there be about staying couple more days? Days during which we found out the inmensity of this city and the terrible public transport!

I would like to dedicate this post to Jawn for inviting us again to his house after our passport problem and many other great things he did for us and above all to my uncle Louis and my aunt Emma because of all the love they gave us during our stay. Really, CHAPEAU!

Next stop... New zealand!!

Nueva Zelanda!!!

In the arms of the wind

(This part of the movie My Globe Upside Down was filmed from the 23rd till the 25th of March)

The Mojave Desert really impressed us... our first great moment was when we drove out of a tiny gas station just at the beginning of the desert and without almost noticing it we passed over the sign Route 66 painted on the road, something that we really hoped to find during our trip.

Being in Mojave felt like being in the middle of complete wilderness. We drove by cows standing by the road quiet used to seeing cars I think, they just lifted up a little bit their eyes but didn´t give us a lot of importance.

The Mojave Desert is the smallest of the four North American deserts and it lies in South Eastern California. People refer to the Mojave Desert as a "high desert" because it has an elevation of 2,000 to 5,000 feet.

There was only one more destination waiting for us before returning back to LA, Death Valley. Death Valley may be known by its three superlatives: hottest, driest, and lowest – as in temperature, rainfall, and elevation in the United States.

I just felt so tiny and vulnerable in that desert. I think that also the name makes your mind fly and imagine all kinds of things. We saw beautiful huge rocks that made me feel like being on a totally different planet. The wind was horrible, so strong. During one of our walks throw an old mining camp we decided to climb up a little bit and suddenly there we were with views that any landscape photographer would admire. We had the beautiful Death Valley at our feet. The wind up there had a strength that I have never experienced before... I just laid in his arms.

It was getting dark outside and it was time to get back in the car and continue our journey to the following town. I think that because of all the excitement we didn’t calculate the time correctly because we suddenly found ourselves in the middle of a dark dark night in Death Valley and with very little gas. After almost an hour we realized that, YES, we were lost. You can just imagine how comfortable I was with this situation, lost in the middle of the desert almost out of gas ;-). We were lucky to see a car, when I saw the two lights getting closer to us, it didn´t even take me one minute to be on the road asking them to stop. They told us to turn around and get some more gas in the closest little gas station and take the other road that will take us to the closest town. At the end we got to a warm bed and everything just turned into a funny experience!!

Me pareció salvaje.
